Director of Engineering
Gehalt: Von 192.898,00 € bis 219.202,00 €
About The Role
As Director of Engineering, you will own the technical execution and team leadership of several core engineering pods at House Rx. You’ll lead a team of 18, including two Engineering Managers and their respective pods, a Staff Engineer, the QA team, and several direct IC engineers. You’ll report to the VP of Engineering and work alongside a peer Director of Engineering. This is a high‐visibility leadership role with real technical expectations. You won’t be a distant executive—you’ll be in the work: reviewing architecture, unblocking teams, making hard calls, and modeling what great looks like.
What You’ll Do
- Drive the Team Forward Set the pace and raise the bar. Establish clear goals, cut through ambiguity, and hold the team accountable to shipping meaningful work with high quality. Partner with product and design to shape the roadmap, make smart trade‐offs, and keep engineering unblocking the business. Build engineering processes that scale: sprint rhythms, incident response, code review standards. Identify risks early and drive to resolution.
- Lead & Develop People Lead and develop your team across all levels, providing coaching, career development, and performance feedback. Hold managers accountable for the output of their pods while investing equally in every direct report’s growth. Build a culture of high standards and continuous growth, where engineers do some of the best work of their careers. Own and maintain a high bar for talent; define what great looks like and hold the standard. Identify and develop future engineering leaders.
- Own Technical Excellence Provide architectural oversight across your pods, ensuring systems are scalable, maintainable, and built to last. Champion best practices across code quality, observability, testing, and system design. Stay close to the technical work to earn trust, spot issues early, and give grounded feedback.
- Champion AI‐Forward Engineering Lead by example with AI development tools and set clear expectations for the team to do the same. Evaluate and introduce AI tooling that improves developer velocity, code quality, and product capability. Build a team culture that treats AI as a genuine productivity multiplier, not a novelty. Help define House Rx’s approach to responsible, high‐leverage AI use in engineering.
About You
- 7+ years in software engineering, with 3+ years in engineering management, ideally including experience managing managers or leading multiple teams.
- You are a driver. You set direction, move with urgency, hold yourself and others accountable, and don’t wait for someone else to solve the problem.
- Proven track record building and retaining high‐performing teams in fast‐moving, product‐focused environments.
- Strong full‐stack background. You can speak credibly to architecture decisions across the stack (Node.js, TypeScript, React, Postgres, AWS). Comfortable reviewing systems design, giving meaningful feedback, and making architectural calls when needed. Experience leading teams through hard technical challenges: scaling systems, managing debt, navigating platform changes.
- Bachelor’s/Master’s in CS/Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
- AI‐Forward mindset. You actively use AI tools in your own workflow and know where they add real value. You’ve helped a team adopt AI tooling thoughtfully, not just talked about it. You follow what’s happening in the space and bring ideas back to your team.
- Exceptional communicator, able to synthesize complexity for engineers, product partners, and executives alike. Comfortable in ambiguity and high‐visibility environments; you bring structure without bureaucracy.
