To continue and expand the scientific services of the Center for National High-Performance Computing (NHR), the NHR Center is seeking to fill two positions as soon as possible: Linux/HPC System Administrator (f/m/d) on a full-time basis (39.4 hours per week). One position is permanent. The second position is initially limited-term until December 31, 2030; provided the relevant requirements are met and funding is available, there is the option of converting the position to a permanent one.

Compensation is based on the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement for the public sector of the federal states (TV-L) in accordance with the candidate's qualifications, up to pay grade 12. Background The ZIB has more than 40 years of experience as an HPC center and, since January 2021, has been one of the nine centers of the nationwide HPC alliance "NHR" (National High-Performance Computing, ), which is funded by the federal and state governments.

We operate computing and storage resources at the highest performance level and support scientists in their computationally intensive projects. Currently, our HPC system "Lise," with a peak performance of 8 PFlop/s, provides a platform for carrying out demanding computational tasks and data analysis workflows to solve complex scientific problems. The "Lise" system comprises 130,000 processing cores, 20 PB of persistent online storage, and 256 GPUs.

The NHR Center at ZIB brings together the technical expertise needed for the efficient operation of HPC resources and provides users with system-specific consulting. The diverse and demanding tasks ahead for the reliable operation of HPC systems require conceptual work in the areas of energy efficiency, heterogeneous computer architectures with GPUs and storage systems, as well as their implementation in production operations in collaboration with the staff of the Supercomputing Systems group.

The focus is particularly on innovative IT technologies and their application in scientific environments, as well as the administration of complex HPC computing architectures featuring accelerators (GPUs, FPGAs), high-speed networks, and modern storage systems.

Your Responsibilities

As a team player at the ZIB's NHR Center, your work will contribute to the continued development of efficient HPC system operations. Your responsibilities will include, among other things: Administration of complex HPC architectures with specialization(s) in subfields such as parallel file systems, management of heterogeneous resources with Slurm, system deployment, and automated system monitoring Evaluation of innovative new technologies in the HPC environment, particularly with regard to the requirements for AI workloads Configuring complex software stacks for system monitoring (Icinga, check-mk, Grafana, Prometheus, ELK) Automating recurring tasks and contributing to the documentation of code and processes Development of user interfaces to enable optimized operations Participation in the evaluation of pre-release and early-shipment systems Presenting project results and contributing to NHR training activities Performing selected administrative and technical tasks directly in the data center Your Profile A successfully completed college degree in a relevant STEM field with corresponding professional experience, or a completed vocational training program in a relevant field, e.g., as an IT specialist for system integration, with several years of relevant professional experience, or comparable knowledge and skills acquired through many years of relevant professional experience in the specified field Good knowledge of modern heterogeneous computer architectures and storage systems in the HPC environment Experience in the administration of Linux systems (RHEL and derivatives), HPC systems, and SLURM Very good knowledge of Bash, Python, and Ansible; experience with programming languages commonly used in the HPC field (C/C++/Fortran) is desirable Good command of English and German at a minimum B2 level Ability to work independently and goal-oriented What We Offer We offer a family-friendly work environment with flexible work and meeting hours, excellent facilities, and a challenging, professional setting as well as a varied, future-oriented, and responsible scope of duties, comprehensive onboarding within a competent and cooperative team, opportunities for professional development and support in advancing your expertise, supplementary retirement plan (VBL), 30 days of annual leave, flexible working hours (flex time), compensation based on the TV-L (collective bargaining agreement for state public service) commensurate with qualifications and professional experience, including an annual bonus, Capital city allowance of up to €150 per month, or alternatively a BVG job ticket plus the difference, discounted access to the FU's dining halls and sports program through close cooperation with Freie Universität Berlin.
