Head of Research Unit “Ecosystems of the Future” (f/m/x) – The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ)
Responsibilities
- Shape and advance the unit’s scientific vision and strategic direction.
- Provide overall responsibility for strategic, personnel and financial leadership and management.
- Develop and implement an ambitious research strategy in line with UFZ strategy, strengthening scientific excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and political and societal impact.
- Foster synthesis of ecological knowledge, engage in international and national advisory panels and science‐policy platforms.
- Lead eight departments with approximately 150 staff across disciplines and career stages.
- Ensure effective management and sustainable operation of the unit’s experimental facilities.
- Represent the unit externally and maintain international visibility, academic impact and societal relevance.
Qualifications
- Distinguished scientific track record with international reputation in biodiversity, ecosystem or related fields.
- Strong leadership skills and proven management competencies in a research context.
- Experience in strategic planning, budget management (≈10millioneuro unit budget) and securing third‐party funding.
- Engagement in international scientific networks and experience on advisory boards or science‐communication activities.
- Commitment to integrity, reliability and responsibility for complex environmental and societal challenges.
- PhD or equivalent and proven capacity for interdisciplinary collaboration.
Compensation and Terms
The position is a tenured appointment with regular performance evaluations every five years. A joint professorial appointment with a university is possible. Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience within the UFZ salary range and includes standard social benefits of the German public sector.
